Many of these micro-level changes -- such as changing phrasing to eliminate words, being aware of "secret handshake" words and words in the midst of change, and understanding when it's okay to not follow style rules -- will never be noticed by either the writer or the reader, but they can make the writing shine just a bit more and give readers a more enjoyable, informative reading experience.

About the presenter:
Lisa McLendon joined the University of Kansas journalism school as the coordinator of the Bremner Editing Center in 2012, after 12 years as a newspaper copy editor. She launched her journalism career at the Denton (Texas) Record-Chronicle, then went on to the Wichita (Kansas) Eagle. McLendon, who also has a doctorate in Slavic linguistics, is the author of "The Perfect English Grammar Workbook," published in 2017.
