Doctors, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals use choices of wording that are designed to say “This is medical!” Some of it increases accuracy for those with the necessary background; much of it builds walls around the information and makes it harder for nonprofessionals to understand. But nonprofessionals do want—and need—to understand it. Sometimes it can even be a matter of life and death.

About the presenter:

James Harbeck is an experienced editor and speaker. He has an MA in linguistics and a PhD in theatre. He is the author of the blog Sesquiotica, co-founder of the group blog Strong Language, and author of numerous articles on sites such as TheWeek.com, BBC.com, and Slate.com, as well as of the books Confessions of a Word Lush, Songs of Love and Grammar, and 12 Gifts for Writers. He is a popular presenter at ACES and Editors Canada conferences, and this year he's sharing the fruits of his graduate research in linguistics.
