When it comes to writing about mental health or editing that copy, you aren't talking about a 50-cent Bic. It's a critical topic that's surrounded by a great deal of stigma and misinformation. Kenna Griffin has a Ph.D. in journalism with research in mental health, specifically trauma. She also has nearly a decade of experience writing and editing mental health copy and is a two-time educator fellow of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma. Join her to learn how to edit copy on mental health-related content without reinforcing stigmas or causing further harm. Also, get tips on how to care for yourself when subjects are potentially triggering.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To better understand words and phrases that may be triggering and need careful consideration.
  2. To better understand emotional trauma responses and why they happen.
  3. To understand helpful coping skills to use when tackling challenging work.

About the presenter:

Kenna Griffin is All Counseling Director of Programming & Development. She has a Ph.D. in journalism with an emphasis in trauma and organizational behavior. She is the author of the book The Viewing Room: Journalists as Witnesses to Executions. Kenna has more than two decades of experience in content writing and community management. She previously worked full-time as a college professor and now teaches adjunct. When she’s not busy writing, editing, or teaching, Kenna is probably in the pool or reading. She reads 150-200 books a year and is a self-described word nerd.
