Description:

Many editors and writers have felt stuck in their careers in the last few years. You may not know where to start when looking for a new career path. Editors and writers are great communicators and have the skills to position themselves into any field or situation.

Learn how you can pivot your career into a new field using the editing skills you already have. ACES member Kelly Lauturner moved from the field of consumer goods to technology and will give you tips to help change your career path.

Three key takeaways:

1. Volunteer to Write for Others.
Many non-profit organizations, PTAs, kids' sports teams and can use help with their newsletters, websites, social media and blogs. You may not get paid for these pieces, but they can help start your portfolio and you can build a relationship with someone that can vouch for your skills.

2. Start a Digital Portfolio
You don't need to have a paper portfolio for writing but links and pdfs can be collected digitally.

Save anything you write that shows off your skills, even if it's a business letter, minutes from an event, or a letter of recommendation to your friend's condo board.

3. Network
Everything comes back to networking. Talk to friends, family, and people you share tour commute with to look for new opportunities. If you're more of a digital person, share your writing on social media to build a network.
